Despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and the closure of all educational institutions in the Dharamshala area in the past two years, DIFF was able, in 2021, to run a Story-to-Storyboard project for four local schools. In a process involving the distribution and completion of three works packs, students were introduced to the concepts of writing a treatment, a screenplay and a storyboard—with focus on the visual language of cinema, types of shot, and film terminology.

We were also able to arrange a screening of new short films at Tong-Len hostel for the children of migrant workers – children who had remained largely under lockdown during the pandemic.
The films included Andrew Krakower’s Yarne, Karishma Dev Dube’s Bittu, Adhip Iyer’s Bully and Prithviraj Das Gupta’s Green Blackberries – all of which were included in DIFF online’s Young Protagonists strand.
Each film was followed by a lively group discussion, facilitated by our outreach team together with Tong-Len’s Secular Ethics Programme project manager, Tashi Norzom, who worked tirelessly on this year’s community programme.
After the screening, seven students from the Story-to-Storyboard project attended a workshop to discuss their work and took part in storyboard and shot-by-shot analysis.
