Like in many parts of the world, the advent of digital technology and the democratisation of cinema production has led to an explosion of independent filmmaking in India. No longer dependent on the traditional centres of film production, often working in regional dialects with small crews and non-professional actors, indie filmmakers across the country are reclaiming their voices, experiences and histories, and exploring themes and subjects that would hitherto have been impossible. But what challenges do they face as they attempt to forge a new path to making films? How do they navigate the usual labyrinth of financial constraints, production challenges and distribution hurdles that filmmaking entails?
Film writer and programmer Prathyush Parasuraman discusses these and other topics with Ruchika Negi and Rajkumari Prajapati (In Between Us), Shahrukhkhan Chavada (Which Colour?), Harshad Nalawade (Follower), Jayant Digambar Somalkar (A Match), Achal Misra (Ri), and Siddharth Chauhan (Amar Colony).
