Darbhanga is known as the heart of Mithila and a formidable seat of music, literature, art and culture, but it has rarely been associated with films, other than being known as the home to popular actor Sanjay Mishra. However, in the last couple of years, the town has emerged as a fount for the newly emerging indie cinema in Bihar. DIFF this year hosts the works of three young filmmakers with roots in Darbhanga: Dhuin (Mist) by Achal Mishra; Pokhar Ke Dunu Paar (On Either Sides of the Pond) by Parth Saurabh; and Dharti Latar Re Horo (Tortoise Under The Earth) by Shishir Jha.
How has the town fired their creative ambition and moulded their cinematic expression? Is there a common thread that binds their themes and aesthetics? What is distinctive about the cinema from Darbhanga?
Independent journalist and national award-winning film critic Namrata Joshi discusses these questions and more with Achal Mishra, Parth Saurabh and Shishir Jha.
